Ottawa Charities

There’s an expression, “mighty oaks from little acorns grow.” Well that expression bloomed into a mighty reality last week as we organized the delivery of donations from the July 27th Hang-Up Help Out event. We were on board from the moment we heard about this event, but we had no idea what was about to happen. Last week our 1-800-GOT-JUNK? teams spent six to seven hours a day sorting, loading and delivering to 27 shelters and charities across the city. But even before the sorting and deliveries, we spent hours on the phone coordinating wish lists and delivery times. Along with her tireless efforts through the day, event organizer Catherine Landry of Ladies Who Lunch, spent an evening getting to know many of the people who would be receiving the items and the people in charge of the shelters and charities, to be sure greatest needs were being served as best as possible.

Hang-Up Help Out was an incredible coming together of the community. The event began with one drop off location and the hope of helping four shelters. The drop off points increased to five and the number of shelters and charities helped – well, look at the list below! Catherine is sending the list to Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, to prompt discussion and action around the needs of the people and families in our own backyard.

Thank you to all of the organizers and to all who volunteered in one way or another. You all played such an incredible role in making this happen. Now let’s keep it going! Use this list to continue to pay it forward. You have names, phone numbers and addresses. Let’s continue to help those who need it most.
